Avanti West Coast to enter public ownership on 7 March 2027

Avanti West Coast services are due to transfer to public ownership on 7 March 2027, the Department for Transport announced on 28 September. Passengers using the West Coast Main Line, including trains through London Euston and Manchester, should see no ownership change yet; check current journey updates and look for details of timetable changes planned for December 2026.

The transfer is scheduled for 7 March 2027

The government says it will take control of Avanti West Coast services on that date. Until then, Avanti continues to operate its intercity trains from London Euston to destinations including Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow and North Wales.

The announced date is a future transfer, not a change that has already taken place. The Department for Transport has not said that the ownership announcement itself changes today’s train times or service arrangements.

December 2026 timetable changes come first

Before the transfer, the government plans timetable amendments beginning in December 2026. The announcement does not set out the specific changes passengers will see, so routes, departure times and service frequencies should not be assumed to change in any particular way until detailed timetables are published.

Other announced measures are also plans with future deadlines:

  • By the end of 2027: an extra £10 million is planned for power and signalling maintenance.
  • Over three years: £50 million is planned for London Euston facilities.

These are announced investments, not completed repairs or station improvements. The announcement does not specify what work will be carried out or when passengers will see it.

Check your journey before travelling

For trips now, use current train times and disruption notices from the railway before setting out. A future change of operator does not confirm whether a particular service is running on time today.

Passengers planning travel around the December 2026 timetable change should check the published timetable once details are available. The next practical milestone is the release of those timetable details; the transfer date remains 7 March 2027.
