England’s Vocational GCSEs: Planned Subjects and Start Dates

The Department for Education announced plans for Vocational GCSEs on 23 September 2026. They are intended for pupils in England alongside traditional GCSEs, with some subjects potentially available from September 2029. Families choosing subjects now should check their school’s current options: pupils cannot take a Vocational GCSE this academic year, and the suggested subjects are not a final list.

What the Department for Education announced

Vocational GCSEs are planned qualifications that would combine GCSE-level study with a practical focus. The government says they are intended to sit alongside traditional GCSEs and eventually replace Technical Awards. That does not mean existing Technical Awards are being replaced immediately.

The announcement points to possible vocational subject areas, but the final subjects and titles have not been confirmed. The Department for Education’s implementation plan says these will be confirmed when qualification content is published. Families should therefore treat any suggested subjects as provisional.

When could pupils take the new qualifications?

The announcement sets out an early possible start, not a date when every subject will be available. Some Vocational GCSE subjects could begin from September 2029. The wider post-16 pathways rollout has its own timetable, and the qualification content and titles are still to come.

  • This academic year: Vocational GCSEs are not available to take.
  • From September 2029: Some subjects are planned to become available, subject to the rollout and confirmed content.
  • As content is published: Families and schools can check which subjects are confirmed and when each will be offered.

How they relate to GCSEs, V Levels and T Levels

Traditional GCSEs remain part of the planned mix: Vocational GCSEs are designed to sit alongside them, rather than replace GCSEs as a whole. The stated longer-term change is that Vocational GCSEs would eventually replace Technical Awards.

V Levels and T Levels belong to the wider set of post-16 pathways in the government’s implementation plan. The announcement does not provide enough detail to treat them as interchangeable qualifications or to assume how a particular pupil would move between them. Families should check the published content and progression guidance when available.

What families should check with a school

When discussing subject choices, ask the school which qualifications it currently offers and whether it expects to offer any new subjects once they are confirmed. Also check whether the choice is for a GCSE, a Technical Award or another qualification, and what progression routes the school advises for the pupil’s plans.

The next useful milestone is publication of confirmed subject content and titles. Until then, schools’ current options are the practical guide for this year’s choices; the September 2029 date signals a possible start for some subjects, not a guarantee that every school or subject will be ready then.
