Huddersfield rail closure: check Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield routes

Modern passenger train traveling through lush green countryside in Northern England.

Passengers travelling through Huddersfield on Thursday 24 September should check their full journey before setting off: no trains are scheduled to run to, from or via Huddersfield during the Transpennine Route Upgrade works. Northern and TransPennine Express services are affected, and the alternative depends on the route and live service status.

Huddersfield trains are suspended from 19 September to 4 October

National Rail lists the closure from 19 September to 4 October 2026. Huddersfield and Slaithwaite stations are scheduled to reopen on 5 October, according to the Transpennine Route Upgrade project. Northern says trains cannot travel through Huddersfield during the works and advises passengers to allow extra time.

The published engineering plan describes the planned disruption. It does not confirm the status of a particular train or replacement connection today, so check close to departure as well as when planning ahead.

Northern and TransPennine Express routes are affected

Northern and TransPennine Express services are subject to changes, which may include amended trains, diversions or replacement buses depending on the route. Travellers heading towards Leeds, Manchester or Sheffield should not assume that their usual train or a particular bus connection will operate.

Check each leg of your journey, including connections and the return trip. Allow extra time, and follow the operator’s current instructions for any replacement transport.
